General Inquiries

A piping system is only as reliable as its weakest joint. Even the highest-quality pipes and fittings can develop installation defects – an improperly welded joint, an undertightened fitting, or a hairline stress crack from mishandling. These defects are invisible to the eye, but they can cause catastrophic failures once a system is pressurized and put into service.

Pre-delivery pressure testing is the industry-standard method for verifying that an installed piping system is completely sound before water flows through it. It is not optional – it is the final quality checkpoint that separates a reliable installation from a liability.

What Is Pre-Delivery Testing?

Pre-delivery testing is a hydraulic pressure test performed on site, after assembly is complete, but before the system is handed over and put into operation. The standard testing pressure is 1.5 times the system maximum planned operating pressure.

Why 1.5x?

The factor of 1.5x is defined by international standards (it comes from the German standard DIN 1988-2 for drinking-water installations) and serves two purposes: Safety margin verification confirms the system can withstand pressure spikes and surges. Defect exposure ensures weaknesses are found before they cause damage.

Preparation: Three Critical Steps Before Testing

1. Secure

Close all isolation valves and ensure all open ends are capped. Any path for water to escape will invalidate the test.

2. Fill

Fill the system slowly with water. Open vent valves at the highest points to allow air to escape. Air trapped in the system can cause misleading pressure readings.

3. Isolate

Divide the system into sections and test each section separately. This allows precise identification of any fault location.

The Two-Stage Test Protocol

Stage 1 – Initial Check (30 Minutes)

Raise the system pressure to 1.5x the maximum operating pressure and hold for 30 minutes.

  • Pass: Pressure drop does not exceed 0.6 bar, and no leakage is observed
  • Fail: Any visible leakage, or pressure drop exceeding 0.6 bar

Stage 2 – Extended Verification (2 Hours)

If Stage 1 is passed, continue to hold pressure for a further 2 hours.

  • Pass: Pressure drop does not exceed 0.2 bar, and no leakage is observed
  • Fail: Any visible leakage, or pressure drop exceeding 0.2 bar

If the pressure drop exceeds the limit, a leak is present. The affected section must be repaired or re-welded, and the test repeated from Stage 1.

Final Commissioning After a Passed Test

Once both stages are successfully completed:

  • Flush the system: Run water through all lines to remove any debris introduced during installation.
  • Drain unused branches: Close and drain any sections that will not be immediately used.
  • Document the test: Record the test date, pressure values, duration, and the responsible engineer name.

Conclusion

Pre-delivery pressure testing is not a formality – it is a fundamental engineering requirement that protects your project, your client, and your professional reputation. Every Pinoplast PPR-C piping installation should be tested before commissioning using the two-stage protocol described above.
